Opel Manta Tuning

The Opel Manta is a good car for tuning - and we're not talking just bolt-on bits of plastic here - they come later. The purists may cringe at any changes other than replacing parts on a standard Manta and that's entirley up to them - I respect that. But in turn those who improve their cars must deserve equal respect. 'nuff said. Here's our tuning sections so far...

Manta Bodykits
General Advice for Bodykits

Bodykits by their very nature are non-original equipment, so even though they are designed for a particular car, don't expect to simply fit the kit and it look perfect straight off the shelf. They do require work to fit well, so either spend some time fitting it or get someone with experience to do it. There's nothing worse than a badly-fitted bodykit - whether it be for the owner or for the car - if it's done badly, people will notice and rather than being cool, quite the opposite will happen.
Manta 400 Bodykit

OK, so there's been a number of bodykits available over the years, the most obvious and popular kit being the Manta 400 bodykit, usually a replica of the panels on the Manta400. I had a replica 400 bodykit on my old 1975 Vauxhall Cavalier Coupe - it consisted of all fibreglass parts including sills/running boards, front wheel arches, rear wheel arches, 400 bonnet, and 3-piece 400 boot spoiler all integrated into the boot lid itself. I managed to salvage a number of the pieces, some better than others and have kept the arches and nosecone. I do have a really good quality 400 bonnet but that's for my V8 project.

TIP - some really cheap bodykits have a lot of 'flash' particularly around the air vents on the 400 bonnet. This is simply where the mould splits and the material leaks into the gap. If the flash is not removed they can look very cheap and nasty - either spend time getting the profile right or spend some more money on a better quality bodykit.

Manta Brakes and Braking systems, improvements, upgrades and modifications

The brakes on the A Series were IMHO better than they were on the B. I had a Manta GTE which I nearly embedded in the back of a Manta GT had there not been a wide enough slip-road in which to avoid an accident.

So uprating brakes is a good way of improving the car's braking performance - improving safety and giving peace of mind. After all, what's the point of having a fast/quick car if the brakes are no good? Here's some brake tuning improvements for your cherished Opel.

Carlton Vented Disc

The 2.2 Vauxhall Carlton vented front disc is a good brake conversion for a Manta. The GTE in particular being a 110BHP sports coupe with pretty mediocre brakes, benefits greatly from a brake conversion/brake upgrade.

By binning the single front disc and single pot slider callipers you are replacing the unit with a heavier disc but for its twin disc and vented design it is a superior brake conversion.

The brake servo unit can be left the same, and the pipes too, but the Carlton disc and calliper will replace the Manta setup like-for-like.

Manta Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Stopping your Manta is a good thing. So upgrading the rear drum brakes to shiny new disc brakes improves the stopping power no end. The Rear disc conversion kit from MantaMorfin is a good kit with optional extras to improve your braking setup. If you would like to purchase a conversion kit or know more details have a chat with Gary on 01706 630 679 or email gaz5651@hotmail.com

The photo on the right shows the COMPLETE rear disc copnversion kit in place.

Manta Engine Tuning

The Cam-in-head CiH engine can still be tuned up. My old Exclusive GTE had a modified CiH engine with the old Vauxhall Carlton stainless 2.2 crank & con-rods, bigger exhaust and inlet valves, a 'fly-cut' compression ring cylinder head from Oselli Engineering, with a one-off Kent Cam, K&N air filter (panel style) and Jetex exhaust system. This got the standard 2.0E engine from 110 BHP to 137 BHP though the exhaust was a bit restrictive.

Opel Manta Tuning -Suspension

Sorting out your suspension is not just a for show, it can really benefit your vehicle's performance too. When people say it improves handling that's such a vague term but suspension mods can improve acceleration, deceleration, cornering, response, it can lower the car's centre of gravity...

...just drive a standard car, then get into a performance car and the difference is obvious. For the best comparison take your Manta out for a drive, come home, fit all the suspension upgrades and then take it out again. The difference between standard suspension and uprated suspension should bring a big smile to your face and make driving fun :)
