B5 (1995-1998) Audi launched the A4 in 1995 on Volkswagens B5 platform, which it shared with the fifth generation Volkswagens. Like the VWs it had a longitudinally-mounted engine and standard front wheel drive. The Avant station wagon arrived a year later. A wide range of engines were available to European customers, ranging between 1.6 and 2.8 L. The Audi 2.8 V6 was the only engine option in USA until 1997.
B5 facelift (1998-2001) Audi revised the A4 in early 1998. The most significant changes included a 6-speed gearbox and the new high-performance S4. See S4 Tuning for more details. A4 changes also included new taillights, headlights, handles, and other minor visual changes.
During 1998 the 1.8T engine had an output rise to 170 PS (125 kW), while the 12-valve V6 was replaced by the 30 valve unit that had been available in Europe for two years. In 1999, Audi launched the higher performance model RS4 - see the RS4 Tuning section for more details.
B6 (2000-2005) Audi Launched the new A4 late in 2000 on the B6 platform. The 1.8T 20 valve Turbo now coming with 150 or 180 PS, while the 3.0 V6 with five valves per cylinder was capable of 220 PS and 300 Nm (221 ft.lbf) of torque. In 2002 Audi upgraded power in the 1.8 Turbo engines to 190 PS and released an A4 Cabrio convertible variant.
B7 (2004-present) Audi released a redesigned A4 in late 2004 the first to be unique to Audi and not shared. The B7 is really a revision of the outgoing B6, and not a ground-up redesign. Audi introduced the new 2.0 TFSI and 3.2 V6 FSI and dropped the five-valve design for the four valves per cylinder configuration. The front grill assembly has changed to be full height in the same manner as the Audi A6.
